William Russell, who played beloved companion Ian Chesterton in the early days of the iconic British science fiction television series Doctor Who, has passed away at the age of 99. The sad news was confirmed by The Guardian on 3 June 2024.

Born William Russell Enoch on 19 November 1924, Russell began his acting career on stage before making his television debut in the 1950s. He joined Doctor Who in 1963, appearing alongside William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Russell's portrayal of Ian, a science teacher who became the Doctor's first human companion, was highly acclaimed and helped establish the series as a global phenomenon.

Russell left Doctor Who in 1965 but continued to act in a wide range of film and television roles throughout his career. He was known for his versatility, playing everything from villains to heroes. Russell's other notable credits include The Avengers, Z-Cars, and The Bill.
